Animals is a music video for the song of the same name by Brooklin based artist and musician Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never. The album Garden of Delete is based on the idea of engaging with the ugly parts of ourselves but specifically reflects on Lopatin’s experience of male puberty. The album was released alongside companion midi files from a fictional 90’s cyber-metal band called Kaoss Edge. http://www.kaossedgeofficial.com/

The song's lyrics reference Nick Bostrom's work on artificial intelligence, in which he posits that were superior beings to discover the human race they would simply ignore us, as we ignore animals in a cage.

The camera’s position fly’s through the text, towards the grid of footage. This is reminiscent of motion graphic test sequences common in films such as StarWars, while also emulating the perspective of flying towards the earth surface.

The video grid contains a collection of webcam footage, capturing both animals at a zoo and humans in public space, and private space. The footage was obtained from webcam footage on youtube and other more obscure live feed archives. In selecting the footage I consciously choose footage from an above perspective. All these decisions work to achieve a relationship of voyeuristic and omnipresent viewership.

Close consideration has been paid to the webcam footage presentation. To emulate a surveillance room cathode ray television (CRT), the footage is presented through simulated RGB diodes. As the camera travels closer the footage is deconstructed, forcing the viewer to detach from the subject matter and examine the surface of the footage.
